A Snapshot of Few Things to Consider Before Buying Your First ...

Earlier, photography was not for all. Cameras were classified into one that was used by specialized photographers while the other used by laymen were more for fun than having aesthetic appeal. Both amateur and professional photographers today use digital cameras. With cheaper digital cameras available and free learning materials accessible over the Web, you can easily be on your way to becoming a professional photographer should you choose to do so. Even amateurs can shoot like big boys with a small bit of training with digital cameras.

If you are really passionate about learning about photography, there are courses starting from one-day beginner?s photography course to comprehensive full time courses that may last up to several years. Starting with user-friendly digital cameras, you can excel in specialized photography.

If you are a writer, you can definitely benefit from incorporating thoughtful images while publishing contents ? be it on Web or print. Some truths never die: texts and images make a great combination, and Web 2.0 technologies with blogs and social media sites offer great opportunities for creative-minded people to combine texts and photos to deliver a great user experience.

You can learn basics of photography in easy steps. There are many free quality learning materials on the Web that give you step-by-step introduction to photography, starting from object and light source, optics (lens), aperture, shutter, and sensor.

The first challenge that you face is to figure out which camera you need for your use. With so many choices available today, the preliminary lesson should include basics of photography, how cameras work, and decide which camera to buy and how that selection would affect your photographs. The next lesson that you could have is about vivid assisted and automatic settings supported by your digital camera and about your digital camera?s manual settings. You should be given a fair idea of camera care as well. By this time, you should know well about your camera parts and feel confident in holding your camera the right way.

You then learn about few tricks that result in better photos. The final lesson of your crash course in photography could be editing images in post. Editing your photos with color correction, touch-ups and a few other fun effects should complete your crash course in basics of photography. Most digital cameras use memory card to store photos. You should feel comfortable in removing memory card from your digital camera to computer and other nitty-gritty of linking digital camera with PC and web technologies for best results.

The services provided by a professional photographer include photo restoration, retouching, photo repairs and manipulation. Commercial studio photography, advertising photography and still life photography are the niches a modern photographer can specialize in. PR photography is fast catching on, thanks to Web 2.0 technologies and coming out of social media sites that allow images to be loaded at a touch of fingertips. Many professional photographers also excel in crafting business portraits. Again, wedding photography is something which requires its own specialized skill sets.

Libraries protest Random House price hike (omg!)

NEW YORK (AP) ? The American Library Association is urging Random House Inc. to reconsider its steep increases in the price of e-books for library wholesalers

Random House, the country's largest trade publisher, has informed libraries that wholesale charges for e-books would rise by more than 20 percent for new adult releases and more than double for new children's books. Random House noted that e-books can be "repeatedly circulated without limitation," unlike paper books, which eventually become worn or damaged. It also asked that libraries provide more information about patrons' "borrowing patterns."

"Currently absent such information in quantity, it is important to reiterate that our guiding principles in setting these new e-prices are the unrestricted and perpetual availability of our complete frontlist and backlist of Random House, Inc. titles under a model of one-copy, one user," according to a statement issued Friday by Random House.

"We believe that pricing to libraries must account for the higher value of this institutional model, which permits e-books to be repeatedly circulated without limitation. The library e-book and the lending privileges it allows enables many more readers to enjoy that copy than a typical consumer copy. Therefore, Random House believes it has greater value, and should be priced accordingly."

The library association issued a statement later Friday saying that libraries were enduring "extreme financial restraint," which a major price hike would worsen.

"While I appreciate Random House's engagement with libraries and its commitment to perpetual access," ALA president Molly Raphael said in the statement, "I am deeply disappointed in the severe escalation in e-book pricing reported today. Calling on our history together and our hope to satisfy mutual goals moving forward, the American Library Association strongly urges Random House to reconsider its decision. In a time of extreme financial constraint, a major price increase effectively curtails access for many libraries, and especially our communities that are hardest hit economically."

Random House, where authors include Stieg Larsson, John Grisham and Toni Morrison, is one of the few major publishers to offer its entire e-book catalog to libraries. Competitors such as Penguin Group (USA) and Simon & Schuster have either limited e-books for libraries or made them entirely unavailable. Publishers are concerned that free downloads could cost them sales.
