Be a Big Wheel: Get the best in Cycling Equipment

To become fit and do something as a family, we decided to take up cycling.

Cycling equipment has unlimited possibilities of style, colour, size and designer brands. Moreover, the decision concerning which cycling gear to purchase is mind boggling.

Purist cyclists build their own custom "rides". If you are a confirmed cyclist this means building your bicycle from the ground up! Those who want a specific brand with customized pedals, handlebars, and seat and safety equipment but do not have the time or skill necessary to build a customized cycle can opt to have one built to their specifications by a cycle shop.

If you are novices like we are, you can purchase a ready-made cycle at any cycle or sports retail centre or at one of the many online cycle sites. Having made the decision about whether to purchase road cycles or mountain cycles or triathlon cycles and which brand to buy, we were faced with decisions about which custom saddles, pedals and handlebars and handlebar grips are best for each cyclist.

Just when I thought decision making time and stress were at an end, I was faced with the next hurdle: what to wear.

Foolishly, I decided that my walking clothes and running shoes would be fine. My sister was scandalized. Cycling without the proper cycling equipment and the latest fashion was as gauche as horseback riding in blue jeans and sneakers.

So off we went to get proper cycling attire. Apparently any serious cyclist must have proper, designer rain gear. My solution was not to venture out when it looked like rain but apparently serious cyclists brave all manner of weather.

According to my sister and the helpful staff at the cycling equipment store, one needs baggy cycling shorts to allow for comfort and range of motion.

I was also allowing for thirty extra pounds when I chose this style. Cyclists can improve their ride and cut wind resistance with designer cycling shorts which also make for a more comfortable saddle sit as well.

Next one needs a base layer. This keeps you warm in windy and cold weather. Then one needs cycling gloves. The choice of brand names, styles, colours and sizes is dizzying. Full finger gloves will protect from cold and wind. If you choose full finger gloves then you have an option of thick, thin or lobster layer gloves. Short finger gloves provide less protection but more freedom.

Next cycling shoes demanded serious consideration. The choices in type alone made me reel. Did I want touring shoes, mountain bike shoes, road bike shoes or casual biking shoes? These of course came in every style, shape, brand, and colour. They were available in a stunning array of cleat styles.

For a mere fortune I am now clad from head to toe in the latest designer cycling gear.
