Hanov, when speaking about Ulmanis as the most active leader of the democratic country, draws parallels with modern political culture, noting that both then and now there have been many governments with a short life.
He also noted that society?s involvement in the country?s political life was a major factor during Ulmanis? time. ?It is possible that there was much more space for political cooperation at the time,?- said the professor. He said that there were many different instruments for political contribution. As an example he mentions a school where teachers and pupils participated in political processes.
Hanov said that modern society lacks space to actively participate in the country?s political events.
Hanov also noted that the issue of rural development was an important issue in the beginning of the 20th century and Ulmanis was deeply involved in resolving this issue, motivating young people not to travel to cities in search of fortune, but remain in rural areas and contribute to their development. ?This situation is also important nowadays, because many young people leave their homes and set off for Riga in search of happiness,?- said the professor.
It was reported that a cycle of lectures about the Latvian Prime Ministers will be opened on Thursday, September 6. The first lecture will be dedicated to Karlis Ulmanis.
Lectures will continue in 2013. Their goal is to improve society?s understanding of Latvia?s history, national values, including the contribution of different officials in state development.
