How To Repair Home and Yard Damage From Fallen Storm Trees ...

fallen tree 103112.jpg

I was a full-blooded New Yorker for the first eighteen years of my life and then have lived out west for the past eighteen. As I worry about friends and family back East and see Sandy's horrible destruction, I have begun researching what needs to be done about one of the major problems I keep seeing over and over again: the fallen trees.

Since the news of Sandy has hit I have seen countless images from friends and family of massive trees being uprooted in yards, falling on houses, poking through walls and even falling on cars in the driveway. Luckily everyone is safe through this ordeal, but when it's all settled the question of how to deal with the trees and damage will surface. I have put together some research on what to know and where to start.

Stay Inside: If a tree falls on your house stay inside. Don't go out and look at it or try to move or cut it down. Things are still moving, falling and unpredictable; you can deal with it after the storm has passed.

Call The Fire Department: If a tree has fallen on your house call your local fire department asap. They will check to make sure that no damage has been done to gas and electrical lines. Treat all wires as live wires and do not touch or try to untangle them.

Call Your Insurance: Your homeowners insurance should cover the damage to your house or yard from a natural disaster. You also need to check whose responsibility it is if the tree causes damage to your neighbor's yard. If a tree caused damage to your car, then you need to see if that is covered by the comprehensive portion of your auto policy.

Take Pictures: After the storm has passed, take pictures of all the damage for insurance.

Tree Removal: Once everything has settled and it's time to clean up, have a tree removal company come out to your house, which should be covered by your insurance.

Be Patient: I know this could be the hardest step, but there are a lot of people who need help and a lot of damage out there. It'll all get fixed, it just might take some time.

Good Luck and Stay Safe!

Bad weather 'hits honey yield'

A cold and wet summer across the UK has caused a "dramatic fall" in the amount of honey produced by British bees, a survey of beekeepers has revealed.

Yields are down 72% compared to 2011, research by the British Beekeepers' Association (BBKA) suggested.

An average of 8lb (3.6kg) of honey was produced per hive this year, compared to the annual average of 30lb (13.6kg).

The majority of those surveyed (88%) said the rain and cold weather was the main reason the harvest was poor.

More than 2,700 beekeepers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland were surveyed in the BBKA's annual Honey Survey.

The honey harvest was lowest in London, where hives produced an average of 5.6lb (2.5kg) of honey.

'Most difficult year'

In Northern Ireland, hives yielded the highest average of 25.8lb (11.7kg) of honey - but the figure is only half the amount normally produced by bees in the area.

Earlier this year, the cold and wet conditions forced the organisation to issue a mid-summer warning to feed honey bee colonies with sugar syrup if necessary to avoid starvation.

Honey bees produce honey as a food store. Normally, this store would be enough to see them through the winter months.

The BBKA warned the worst may be yet to come, as a lack of food for bees and wet conditions mean breeding queens have been unable to produce a large enough brood to see colonies through the winter.

Peter Hutton, a beekeeper in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, described 2012 as "the most difficult year I have known in my 53 years of beekeeping".

"Bad weather in spring prevented honey bees in many areas from collecting nectar from early flowering crops such as oil seed rape, and the rain continued in many places throughout June and July preventing honey bees from foraging on later crops," he said.

In London, where yields were hardest hit, beekeeping experts said that in addition to the bad weather there was a lack of food for bees in the city.

Angela Woods, secretary of the London Beekeepers' Association, said: "Rather than putting beehives on office roofs, we encourage companies in London who want to help to look at different ways of supporting bees and beekeepers.

"We need more forage for the bees and better-educated beekeepers."

Tim Lovett, the BBKA's public affairs director, said there has been greater emphasis on "training and developing" beekeepers in recent years.

He added: "We need more resources to put into training, education and bee health research, to continue to support our honey bees and other pollinators.

"Well trained beekeepers are better equipped to deal with the adverse conditions we have seen this year.

"Without training, this year's situation might have been a lot worse."

Foul-mouthed parrot seeks new home in UK

(AP) ? Everyone has a few faults. In Beaky's case, he swears (a lot) and he bites.

Not good qualities for a parrot seeking a new home.

Still, honesty is the best policy, so the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has decided to come clean about his shortcomings.

Supervisor Angelina Lusher said Wednesday that anyone who takes Beaky in will have to put up with some rude language. The agency also says he tends to bite people until he bonds with them.

Beaky is a chattering lory who will only be given to new owners with experience handling exotic birds.

Lusher says Beaky needs interaction with people or other birds to have a fulfilling life.

Miami Heat Championship Rings Awarded In Glitzy Ceremony (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

MIAMI -- LeBron James held his index finger aloft, then turned and took a walk nine years in the making.

A few moments later, a championship ring ? finally ? was his.

James and the Miami Heat celebrated their NBA title once again Tuesday night, with the ring-and-banner ceremony replete with an indoor fireworks show that immediately preceded their season opener against the Boston Celtics.

NBA Commissioner David Stern handed Heat owner Micky Arison the first ring of the night, and Arison handed the others out to executives, coaches and players.

James went last, as the crowd roared for the reigning NBA MVP.

"It's not given," James said earlier Tuesday. "These moments are not given."

Stern gave brief remarks to the crowd, starting his address by mentioning "those who were affected" by Hurricane Sandy, which struck the East Coast earlier this week. (Stern misspoke and referred to the storm Hurricane Katrina, though his point was clear.) He congratulated Heat executives and coaches, then lauded Miami's players.

"And congratulations to the Miami Heat fans," Stern said.

The only player to address the crowd was veteran Mike Miller, who spoke after warmups.

"We want to thank you guys so much for all your support," Miller said. "Without you guys, a night like tonight's not possible. The journey that starts tonight is going to be even more challenging, so we're going to need your passion, your support and your energy even more. Enjoy the game tonight and let it fly."

The rings had the words "All In" on one side, and "Family" underneath two images of the Larry O'Brien Trophy on the other. James hugged Stern briefly as the commissioner said a few words, then got a few words from Arison before checking out the box that held his newest bauble.

Players posed for a quick photo as the banner started being raised, then James and others took their rings out to examine the detail. He touched the banner as it rose behind him, then went back to checking out the ring.

Soon, they were put away, the lights came on, and the season started.

"I think we all know what another year's all about," James said. "We know what our long-term goal is. But we're not going to take any short cuts. It's a process. It's always been that way for us."

The pursuit of a title is what drove James every year since joining the NBA in 2003, and he had been close twice, ultimately falling in his first two trips to the NBA Finals.

His breakthrough came last June, and James capped his stellar postseason with a triple-double in Game 5 of the finals against Oklahoma City, as the Heat capped off the second title in franchise history.

"I'm not going to take this moment for granted," James said. "It doesn't happen to everyone. I know the history of the game. I am going to live in the moment. Not going to sit here and say I'm not. It's a special moment for not only our team, for our organization, for the city, whoever's a Miami Heat fan, our families, everything. We'll live in the moment, but we also have some other business to take care of as well."

In the long term, that means another title.

In the short term, that meant getting ready for Boston.

Miami's first ring night was an unmitigated disaster ? a 108-66 loss to the Chicago Bulls after the 2006 championship jewelry was issued. The Heat were on the other end of a banner blowout last Christmas in Dallas, where in a finals rematch they ran out to a 35-point lead shortly after halftime.

The Heat were clearly inspired by having a chance to put a damper on Dallas' day. And they expected the Celtics to feel the same way, after Miami ousted Boston in last season's Eastern Conference finals and then lured Ray Allen away in a free-agency coup over the summer.

"We were hoping that Oklahoma was playing Miami on opening night to watch ring night," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "I don't know why they chose us. But it is what it is. They deserve it. They won it last year. They get to have their day. We had our day and LeBron had to sit and watch that.

"It's his payback night," Rivers added. "And he deserves it. He really does. He's probably gone through more scrutiny than any player, maybe any athlete, that I can ever remember. In that light, I'm happy for him."

The Celtics were not on the court for the ceremony, which preceded the usual pregame warmup period.

"To be able to raise that banner in front of our fans, it took a tremendous amount of work collectively," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We don't want to diminish that."

Bounded Innovation ? the limitations of ... - Business Perspectives

Guest blogger:

Fiona Beukes?Fiona Beukes, The Open University MBA, UK Marketing specialist,?BNY Mellon
?

Innovation in some respects is like the Holy Grail of business ? How do you do it: disruptive or continuous? How do you foster it in your organisation: Incentives? Creative downtime? Hire the right talent? Although these are obviously worthy avenues to explore, they do take time to implement.

man with bulb head

Is your organisation agile enough to foster innovation?

I think many organisations are hampered by their internal environment which prevents a dynamic, agile response to market change. There is definitely a tension, in my view, between Grant?s internal resource perspective and Porter?s economic view of the workings of the external business environment.

From a practical perspective, I also think many companies find it hard to innovate through disruptive change. In my view, the larger and larger an organisation becomes the more bounded I feel it is to its BAU (Business as Usual) and the day-to-day constraints that just ?getting things done? place on its internal environment.

The leaner, younger, more nimble upstart is likely to steal a larger company?s thunder and swiftly re-engineer the external environment. Think of Apple launching the iPod ? a lower quality sound compared to compact discs so Sony engineers believed at the time ? a product that rapidly caught the attention of a mass market interested in synching their PC to a portable, lighter device. In the end, a good quality product (CDs) lost out to unperceived customers? needs and wants (iPods).

I think it is this disconnection from the customer which fosters continuous improvement in an organisation rather than disruptive market change. As a product or service exists already and a level of stakeholder engagement is in play ? internally and externally ? it becomes safer to adapt and improve a product or service rather than launch new ones. Why ruin a good thing?

It is also seems safer to improve the operational side of an organisation by being leaner and more cost-effective rather than radically altering the product or service and risk a customer backlash: something Coca-Cola experienced when they launched new coke in the 1980s. Why risk upsetting the apple cart, and more importantly, an organisation?s shareholders by changing the status quo?

There are certainly many barriers to innovation in organisations ? people, culture, shareholders to name a few ? and varying ways in which to be innovative. In my mind, how an organisation chooses to innovate is contingent on a range of external and internal factors. And also its strategic, longer-term vision of what the future holds.

Couple of weekly portions of oily fish can help ward off stroke; But fish oil supplements don't have the same effect, study finds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? Eating at least two servings of oily fish a week is moderately but significantly associated with a reduced risk of stroke, finds a study published on the British Medical Journal website.

But taking fish oil supplements doesn't seem to have the same effect, say the researchers.

Regular consumption of fish and long chain omega 3 fatty acids has been linked with a reduced risk of coronary heart disease and current guidelines recommend eating at least two portions of fish a week, preferably oily fish like mackerel and sardines. But evidence supporting a similar benefit for stroke remains unclear.

So an international team of researchers, led by Dr. Rajiv Chowdhury at Cambridge University and Professor Oscar H. Franco at Erasmus MC Rotterdam, analysed the results of 38 studies to help clarify the association between fish consumption and risk of stroke or mini-stroke (transient ischaemic attack or TIA). Collectively, these conditions are known as cerebrovascular disease.

The 38 studies involved nearly 800,000 individuals in 15 countries and included patients with established cardiovascular disease (secondary prevention studies) as well as lower risk people without the disease (primary prevention studies). Differences in study quality were taken into account to identify and minimise bias.

Fish and long chain omega 3 fatty acid consumption was assessed using dietary questionnaires, identifying markers of omega 3 fats in the blood, and recording use of fish oil supplements. A total of 34,817 cerebrovascular events were recorded during the studies.

After adjusting for several risk factors, participants eating two to four servings a week had a moderate but significant 6% lower risk of cerebrovascular disease compared with those eating one or fewer servings of fish a week, while participants eating five or more servings a week had a 12% lower risk.

An increment of two servings per week of any fish was associated with a 4% reduced risk of cerebrovascular disease. In contrast, levels of omega 3 fats in the blood and fish oil supplements were not significantly associated with a reduced risk.

Several reasons could explain the beneficial impact of eating fish on vascular health, say the authors. For example, it may be due to interactions between a wide range of nutrients, like vitamins and essential amino acids, commonly found in fish. Alternatively, eating more fish may lead to a reduction in other foods, like red meat, that are detrimental to vascular health. Or higher fish intake may simply be an indicator of a generally healthier diet or higher socioeconomic status, both associated with better vascular health.

The differences seen between white and oily fish may be explained by the way they are typically cooked (white fish is generally battered and deep fried, adding potentially damaging fats).

Although there's a possibility that some other unmeasured (confounding) factor may explain their results, the authors conclude that "they reinforce a potentially modest beneficial role of fish intake in the cause of cerebrovascular disease."

In addition, they say their findings are in line with current dietary guidelines that encourage fish consumption for all; and intake of fish oils to people with pre-existing or at high risk of heart disease. They also support the view that future nutritional guidelines should be principally "food based."

In an accompanying editorial, authors from the Division of Human Nutrition at Wageningen University suggest that although it is "reasonable" to advise patients that eating one or two portions of fish per week could reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke, any benefit of long chain omega 3 fatty acid supplementation is likely to be small. They say it is possible, however, that patients with additional risk factors such as diabetes may benefit.

UOC Careers Blog: What Do Graduates Do?

Although graduate employment levels for 2010-11 were slightly down on the previous year, there were considerable variations between different subjects of study, according to "What Do Graduates Do?" (WDGD) 2012, based on the annual survey of Destinations of Higher Education Leavers that takes place each year.

One career area that clearly bucked the downward trend was Computer Science and IT which showed an 8.5% rise in graduate employment and e-skills UK have forecast that growth in IT employment will grow at twice the UK average until 2020. ?Of course, not all entrants into the industry will have studied IT as a main subject at University.

Less good news came unexpectedly from the public sector with a big fall in entrants and the trend extended to include occupational therapists, physiotherapists, radiographers, teachers and probation officers. ?These areas each offered over 100 posts less than 2010-11 but the biggest drop was in the number of social work entrants, which fell by 420. ?This is certainly not great news for the University of Cumbria, which offers courses in all the professions listed except probation.

The report once again showed the importance of self-employment to graduates from performance arts, media production and art and design. 64.6% or artists and 85.3% of musicians were recorded as being self employed or freelancers six months after graduation.

The Business Studies area is one that exemplifies the "mixed message" theme identified in the WDGD report. ?Although it shows up with a higher level of unemployment than average (10.1%) and a sharp drop in the numbers going on to further study, each of the key disciplines of Accountancy, Business Management and Marketing?showed high levels of graduates going straight into relevant employment.

They were also some of the subjects that produced less graduates working as Retail, Catering, Waiting and Bar staff, a denomination which covers a large number graduates yet to find a suitable career opportunity by the date of the survey - although longitudinal studies show that many succeed in doing so over a longer period of time.

Gunmen kill religious leader in Russia's Dagestan region

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Gunmen shot dead a Muslim cleric, his father and brother as they made their way to a mosque for morning prayers in Russia's volatile Dagestan region on Tuesday, federal investigators said.

The killing of Imam Karimulla Ibragimov, 49, was the latest in a series of attacks on religious leaders in the mainly Muslim southern region following a rise in tension between moderate and more radical Muslims.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on Ibragimov, his brother and father in their car in the town of Derbent at around 6:30 a.m (2:30 GMT), Russia's Investigative Committee said in a statement.

"All three died on the spot from the gunshot wounds," it said. Russian news agencies said the gunmen escaped in a car and described them and bandits, terminology often used by Russian media to describe Islamist militants.

Dagestan is at the center of an insurgency intended to create an Islamic state in the North Caucasus, more than a decade after Russian troops ousted a rebel government in neighbouring Chechnya and restored Moscow's direct control.

Russia's most senior Islamic cleric warned in August that there was a danger of civil war in Dagestan, which is only a few hundred kilometres from the city of Sochi where Russia will host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

A woman disguised as a pilgrim detonated a bomb strapped to her body in Dagestan in August, killing popular spiritual leader Said Atsayev, 74, an opponent of militant Islam. Suicide bombers and gunmen have killed three other imams in Dagestan this year.

The attacks have largely been depicted by religious experts as retribution for the authorities' crackdown on Salafism, a stricter version of Islam preached by militants.

The violence could be aimed at spoiling efforts to reconcile moderate and extremist Muslims and provoke further conflict, the International Crisis Group think tank said in a report this month.

Militants led by Russia's most wanted man, the Chechen-born Doku Umarov, wage almost daily violence to try to establish an Islamist state in the patchwork of mostly Muslim regions in the North Caucasus mountains between the Caspian and Black Seas.

Additional Kepler data now available to all planet hunters

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? The Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md., is releasing 12 additional months worth of planet-searching data meticulously collected by one of the most prolific planet-hunting endeavors ever conceived, NASA's Kepler Mission.

As of Oct. 28, 2012, every observation from the extrasolar planet survey made by Kepler since its launch in 2009 through June 27, 2012, is available to scientists and the public. This treasure-trove contains more than 16 terabytes of data and is housed at the Barbara A. Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes, or MAST, at the Space Telescope Science Institute. MAST is a huge data archive containing astronomical observations from 16 NASA space astronomy missions, including the Hubble Space Telescope. It is named in honor of Maryland U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski.

Over the past three years the Kepler science team has discovered 77 confirmed planets and 2,321 planet candidates. All of Kepler's upcoming observations will be no longer exclusive to the Kepler science team, its guest observers, and its asteroseismology consortium members and will be available immediately to the public.

The objects already discovered may only be the tip of the iceberg. The data store contains clues to the existence of as yet undiscovered planets and a record of stellar behavior of stars near the Sun.

Since its launch, the Kepler spacecraft has stared almost nonstop at more than 150,000 stars in the direction of the summer constellations Cygnus and Lyra. The Kepler mission is operated by NASA's Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif.

The spacecraft simultaneously measures the variations in brightness of the stars every 30 minutes, searching for periodic dips in a star's brightness that occur when an orbiting planet crosses in front of it and partially blocks the light from its parent star.

These fluctuations are tiny compared with the brightness of the star. For an Earth-size planet transiting a solar-type star, the change in brightness is less than 1/100 of 1 percent. This event is similar to the amount of dimming if a flea were to crawl across a car's headlight viewed from several miles away.

These brightness variations are available in the Kepler inventory. Finding planets requires stellar detective work by repeatedly measuring variations in the brightness of target stars.

In addition to yielding evidence for planets circling some of the target stars, the Kepler data also reveal information about the behavior of many of the other stars being monitored. Kepler astronomers have discovered star spots, flaring stars, double-star systems, and "heartbeat" stars, a class of eccentric binary systems undergoing dynamic tidal distortions and tidally induced pulsations.

There is far more data in the Kepler archives than astronomers have time to analyze quickly. Avid volunteer astronomers are invited to make Kepler discoveries by perusing the archive through a website called "Planet Hunters," (http://www.planethunters.org/). A tutorial informs citizen scientists how to analyze the Kepler data, so they may assist with the research. Visitors to the website cannot actually see individual planets. Instead, they look for the effects of planets as they sweep across the face of their parent stars. Volunteer scientists have analyzed over 14 million observations so far. Just last week citizen scientists announced the discovery of the first planet to be found in a quadruple-star system.

96% Argo

All Critics (204) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (195) | Rotten (9)

'Argo' is one of the best movies of the year.

Argo has that solid, kick-the-tires feel of those studio films from the 70s that were about something but also entertained. Only it's as laugh outright amusing as it is sobering.

The movieland satire is laid on thick, but it's also deadly accurate. Schlock has never seemed so patriotic, and Arkin and Goodman have rarely been so good.

Argo is a rollicking yarn, easily the most cohesive and technically accomplished of Affleck's three films so far, but a part of me wishes the director hadn't cast himself in the lead role.

If nothing else, it proves that every so often, the CIA can pull something off - and that yes, Canadians are just about the nicest people on the planet.

The film is a whopper of a tale, one designed for Oscar nominations, Best Picture and Best Director among them.

Argo will make you say "wow" not because of anything big and flashy but purely for its well-told story.

It's a reminder of what the movies can offer when they're at their best: an escape into another world and a pertinent look at our own.

As a director, Ben Affleck is getting into Alan Pakula territory.

Even when it embellishes certain details leading up to its climax, Affleck and his actors by that time have sold the audience on its authenticity. How appropriate.

I found it hard for me to get into at first, but the final act more than makes up for it. Ben Affleck sure has come a long way since his days with Kevin Smith.

It's exciting, it's funny, it's suspenseful. The ending is nail-biting.

This is a classy heist movie with a bizarre set-up; it's entertaining as well as thrilling.

A tense political thriller with a dash of Hollywood satire thrown in to sweeten the deal, this is a gripping crowd pleaser that is sure to take home some statuettes come Oscar season. Your move, Matt Damon.

The real Argo that's landing in cinemas now shouldn't be mistaken as anything other than a spellbinding, old-fashioned thriller. I've got sweaty palms and an elevated pulse to prove that it's one of the year's very best films.

A suspenseful, topical and surprisingly humorous film that's deserving of the Oscar buzz surrounding it.

The only real criticism, surprisingly, is Affleck. Perhaps the time has come to think about spending more time behind the camera rather than in front of it.

...incredibly entertaining, lucid crowd pleaser. I'm [annoyed] that people may hear the synopsis and go 'Oh, that's not my thing', because Argo is everyone's thing: it's one of the year's best films.

Its politics are subtle, its performances are good, and its script is amazing.

There's "creating an intense, claustrophobic situation in a foreign locale" and there's "inciting unquestioning fear of 'the other'," and Argo pulls off the former far more often than it accidentally achieves the latter.

An ingeniously conceived thriller that's almost as much about our collective love of cinema as it is a tricky international incident.

Suspenseful movie based on a true incident; Ben Affleck's stock rises as an actor and director.

It not only confirms Affleck as one of the few A-listers to have made a credible transition to behind the camera, but that he's one of the most exciting mainstream directors around, full stop.

Affleck's seamless melding of intense thrills in Tehran and biting humour in California makes for a wholly satisfying movie.

The use of dramatic licence in the finale is too obvious but aside, Argo is a solid dramatic thriller that is informative, entertaining and gripping.

The film has heart and brains as well as balls, the screenplay delivering a clear and strong story without sacrificing either political or personal context

Mother's little helpers let her relax

Monday, October 29, 2012

Published in Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, the research shows that mother chestnut-crowned babblers bring food to their chicks much less often when they have family members doing the same.

'We were expecting that mothers would work hardest at feeding their chicks because, on average, they have the greatest genetic stake in their young. But this was not the case,' says Dr Lucy Browning, now of the University of New South Wales, who led the research.

Yet by slacking off on the communal task of feeding, it may be that the mother avoids spending energy and risking predator attack while looking for suitable food. Instead, she can save her energy for her next attempt to breed.

This isn't just relevant to birds; ultimately it could help shed light on how we reproduce and raise children ourselves.

'The breeding female produces all the group's offspring, and the more the others can support her, the higher quality offspring she will produce, which is better for everyone,' says Dr Andy Russell of the University of Exeter, another of the paper's authors. 'So in a small group the breeding female does as much as anyone else, but we found that as the group gets larger she reduces her feeding activity by about two thirds.'

The researchers monitored numerous groups of babblers at the University of New South Wales Arid Zone Research Station throughout the process of rearing young. They tracked the size of prey that each adult brought the chicks, what kind of food it was and how often they did it.

Chestnut-crowned babblers are what ecologists call 'obligate cooperative breeders' - they breed in family groups, in which only the dominant pair ever get to produce the offspring, and breeding without help is rare and generally unsuccessful. The other birds have to content themselves with helping their relations raise their chicks, and hoping to improve the chances of their genes getting passed on to the next generation that way. Bringing prey for the youngsters to eat is a big part of this.

This means breeding female babblers don't just have their mate to help take care of their chicks, but also numerous grown-up offspring and other relations. So they can put less effort in without significantly adding to the risk their offspring will starve. Flying about looking for food is tiring, and exposes mothers to the risk of attack by hawks and falcons. And the whole process of breeding is hard work for females; they have to lay eggs and stay sitting on them until they hatch.

So in theory it makes sense that mothers should put less effort into feeding chicks when there are others to do that. But this is one of the first times scientists have shown such a clear pattern for the breeding female alone.

Males may scale back their feeding contributions a little, but there's less reason for them to slack off as they invest much less in each attempt at breeding. They don't have to lay eggs or spend weeks incubating them, so there's less incentive to try to conserve as much energy as possible for the next breeding attempt. Meanwhile the females generally brought large items of prey, but much less often. This increased prey size didn't come close to counterbalancing the drop in how often they brought food.

Russell says that similar group cooperation could have played an important role in the development of human reproduction as we know it. People have an unusually short birth interval compared to with primates of a similar size - women can have another child only another year or so after their last one, compared to about five years in chimpanzees. 'In humans, grannies, siblings and older children provide mothers with a huge amount of support,' he says. 'It's likely that our short birth interval evolved as a consequence of this kind of helping behaviour, which allowed mothers to reduce their investment of energy in their current child in order to prepare for the next one.'

The behaviour is subtly different from that of other obligate cooperative breeders like meerkats; there, both parents significantly reduce their investment in feeding young, not just the mother. Another recent paper by the same team showed that the chestnut-crowned babblers don't just share the burden of child-rearing; they are honest about always feeding the food they bring to the young, even when they're hidden inside the domed nest and could easily just eat it themselves.

Defining Corporate Identity, Brand Identity & Brand Imagewith me ...

1. Corporate identity.
consumers small business seo
Corporate identity is a companys visual presence, which includes the corporate logo and design approach for corporate marketing collateral. Corporate identity does not encapsulate brand identity, which is greatest defined as the soul of your company. Nonetheless, a corporate identity may, and often does, reflect a brand identity. But some ad agencies, advertising businesses and graphic style agencies would have you believe that brand identity is the very same factor as corporate identity and that changing a logo or style method will alter the brand identity. Nonetheless, this is not the case. There are numerous intangible aspects that weigh in on a brand identity. Such cosmetic adjustments can support a brand identity by creating it evident to customers that a company cares about its appearance, but thats about the extent of its power. A corporate identity does, nevertheless, need to evolve with the times. Failure to do so can negatively have an effect on a companys brand identity, but care must also be taken to not overly revise the presentation of a brand, lest customers be concerned about the state of a organization. Corporate identity, along with organizational culture, item high quality, service reputation, functions, advantages, efficiency and value, are some of the crucial elements of brand identity.

two. Brand Identity ? Its the essence of your business.

Musicians: Iran's national orchestra disbanded

(AP) ? Some musicians say the Iranian national symphony orchestra has been disbanded for lack of funds.

The orchestra members told the semiofficial ILNA news agency Monday that they have not rehearsed together and have not been paid for three months.

The orchestra was reactivated just last year, after a two-year break.

The step is likely tied to heightening economic woes in Iran because of government mismanagement and Western sanctions over Iran's nuclear development program. Another key effect of the sanctions has been the collapse of the Iranian currency.

The West suspects that Iran may be heading toward production of nuclear weapons, imposing the sanctions to persuade Iran to drop its uranium enrichment project. Iran insists its program is for peaceful purposes.
