People for Pets Foundation helping find homes for felines, canines ...

By: Eric Watkevich | Culpeper Star-Exponent

?

Entering the Culpeper home of Brenda Crist, you are likely to encounter a success story of the People for Pets Foundation ? one probably stretched out on the floor, and another watching you closely from underneath a couch.

?The calico on the floor is Marmalade, and the black and white one is Mr. Murphy.? Crist says, ?They?re both adopted, but now they?re so fat I?m trying to get them to lose weight.?

Also throughout the house are the supplies and signs for the major rummage sale to be held by PFPF this Saturday March 31 at St. Stevens?s Episcopal Church. Crist, the treasurer and secretary for the foundation, says the event is a major fundraiser.

?People are free to donate items and some baked goods will be for sale,? Crist mentions, ?and lunch is provided so we encourage everyone to come out and support us this weekend.?

The People for Pets Foundation is a Culpeper non-profit organization that works to provide homes and care for local animals. PFPF functions as a releasing agent with the Culpeper Animal Shelter, which means that they take animals, specifically cats, from the shelter and provide them medical attention and a temporary home with a foster mother.

The cats spend a period of time becoming rehabilitated, and are then adopted by the community.

?We get them and we adopt them? says Crist. ?We get them all of their shots. Then their foster mothers take care of them and help them with socialization.? These foster mothers provide for anywhere between ten to 30 cats, depending on the time of the year.

?Spring is kitten season, so we can expect to have more.? Crist mentions.

Currently, PFPF works closely with the Culpeper Animal Hospital, and has numerous projects such as the ?Spay a Momma? and the ?Trap, Neuter, Release? programs that all go to fight one of the biggest problems homeless animals have: over-population.

Due to the expense and necessity of getting stray cats and dogs spayed, a major goal of PFPF is finding a way of getting the procedure done more efficiently.

?One of our dreams,? Crist says, ?is to have in the Culpeper area a low cost spay/ neuter clinic.?

As a result of PFPF?s activities, the euthanization rate for cats in Culpeper has dropped from 42 percent down to 10, and the organization has spent more than $15,000 in medical treatments and spaying for local animals. All told, more than 500 animals were given to good homes by People for Pets in 2011.

?We think animals should be cared for and loved. That?s really what our organization is all about,? Crist said.

People for Pets consists of a seven-member board as well as several volunteers. Many of the board members are also foster mothers, which is itself a vitally needed role.

?The people we want as foster mothers are those who have animal knowledge and kindness towards animals.? Crist said. ?They are the people we cherish.?

Nas Chose Producers Who Were 'Gonna Be There' For Life Is Good

Salaam Remi, No I.D., Heavy D and Da Internz all worked with Esco on his upcoming LP.

Throughout his career, Nas has worked with some of the most celebrated hip-hop producers from Dr. Dre and DJ Premier to the Trackmasters and Swizz Beatz, but for his next LP, Life Is Good, Esco chose to keep the vibe more intimate.

"I wanted to work on a record where it's just not a lot of people," Nas said when he appeared on "RapFix Live" on Wednesday. "So it's mostly No I.D., Saalam Remi, Da Internz; those are the ones who basically gave me the music. They knew what I wanted; they sat with me."

On 2001's Stillmatic, Remi contributed the beat for "What Goes Around" and then came back the next year to give Esco two singles for his God's Son LP ("Made You Look" and "I Can"). No I.D. and Nas have some history as well. In 2007, the Nasty one hopped on the No I.D.-produced cut "Success" off of Jay-Z's American Gangster album, and late last year, Nas, Common and the Chicago producer collaborated on "Ghetto Dreams."

"I needed producers that's gonna be there and get into what I want to get into, have the conversation and start making the records based off of what I'm looking for," God's Son said.

Heavy D also lent a production hand prior to his death last year, making the beat for Life Is Good's latest single, "The Don." Nas didn't find out that Heavy sent the music for him to use until after he died however. "I looked up to Heav," he said. "He's an icon, a music icon."

What are your expectations for Nas' Life Is Good? Tell us in the comments!

Home Improvements | Most Common Home Renovation Mistakes

Taking on home improvements can be exciting and daunting all at the same time. Do the research, get informed and make sure that you don?t fall into the trap of making the most common mistakes that people make when undertaking large renovation projects.

7. Rushing in. Sure, you?re excited and want to get things going but take the time to plan and research your project and get the design decided upon before you get started. Flying by the seat of your pants during a home improvements is not advisable!

6. Taking on more than you can handle. Many people want to do the work themselves either to cut costs or simply because they think DIY will be easy to do. Do the work you know how to do and leave the rest to a trained professional. Hire a general contractor to take care of anything that you can?t handle yourself.

5. Ignoring rules and regulations. Building regulations are there for a reason, and are enforced strictly in most areas. Get to know your local by-laws, and find out which permits are required for your renovation projects. Better to deal with this beforehand rather than deal with the consequences down the road as this could involve paying fines or undoing the completed work.

4. Hiring the wrong contractor. Whoever you hire is going to be in and out of your home and your life for the next while. Be sure that you can live with that and also that you are on the same page when it comes to the work that is to be done. See our blog Tips to Working Well with Your General Contractor for more on this topic.

3. Cutting corners. Trying to cut costs by using cheap materials or doing only cosmetics and avoiding important elements like windows, electrical and plumbing is ill advised. If you can?t afford to do it right, wait until you?ve saved up enough money and take the time to plan and dream while you?re saving.

2. Under budgeting. It is easy to under budget when it comes to home improvement projects since often one thing leads to another as you open up walls, pull out floors or ceilings and find hidden structural problems that have to be addressed right away. Don?t splash out on high-end finishes before the major work has been done and try to have a contingency fund in place if at all possible.

1. Underestimating the time requirement and the chaos involved. Renovations can be stressful, time consuming and even frustrating at times. They are rarely completed as quickly as you?d like, especially if you are living without a kitchen or a bathroom.

Preparing for your home renovation well ahead of time and talking to a home improvement specialist can help you avoid the biggest pitfalls of home renovations.

Apple ready to license its nano-SIM design for free, on one not-so-nano condition

Apple ready to license its nano-SIM design for freeIf you hadn't heard, there are two rival nano-SIM designs going around, but there's only room for one of them to become an industry standard. Nokia, Motorola and RIM sit together in one corner, and we've already covered why they think their design is superior. On the other side of the ring sits Apple, which has its own tactics for bringing ETSI, the European Telecoms Standards Institute, over to its way of thinking. According to a legal letter shown to FOSS Patents by a "perfectly reliable source", Apple is prepared to license its nano-SIM design royalty-free, so long as it becomes the new standard and all other nano-SIM patent holders reciprocate the gesture. Such a gambit may not appease Cupertino's rivals and it certainly doesn't address their technical concerns, but it might show that Apple isn't looking to profit out of this particular format war and is simply continuing its quest for greater clarity on FRAND licensing terms. Then again, it could all just be lawyer-speak.

Update: Nokia has responded to Apple's move, making it clear that it still prefers its own design. Mark Durrant, director of communications for the Finnish firm said, "the principal issues remain the technical superiority of our proposal and that Apple's proposal does not meet the pre-agreed ETSI requirements... Apple's proposal for royalty free licensing seems no more than an attempt to devalue the intellectual property of others." We expect this to go back and forth a few more times.

Pope visits Mexico pledging to fight drugs "evil"

LEON, Mexico (Reuters) - Pope Benedict arrived in Mexico on Friday promising to "unmask the evil" of drug trafficking in a country that has been ravaged by a surge in gang violence over the past five years.

The pope began his three-day visit in the central city of Leon with a festive welcome from President Felipe Calderon after making strong statements aboard his papal plane about Mexico's spiraling drug war.

"We must do whatever is possible to combat this destructive evil against humanity and our youth," he told reporters, referring to the violent conflict between rival drug cartels and the state that has killed 50,000 people since 2007.

"It is the responsibility of the Church to educate consciences, to teach moral responsibility and to unmask the evil, to unmask this idolatry of money which enslaves man, to unmask the false promises, the lies, the fraud that is behind drugs," the pope added.

Raising his arms aloft as he exited the plane, Benedict descended the stairs slowly, holding the handrail, and greeted a small group of young children as crowds cheered behind.

Addressing the masses gathered at the airport in a steady, measured tone, the pope said in Spanish he had come as a "pilgrim of faith, of hope, and of love."

"I will pray especially for those in need, particularly those who suffer because of old and new rivalries, resentments and all forms of violence," said Benedict, adding he hoped his message would also reach Mexicans outside of their homeland.

The bloodletting across Mexico was in the mind of many waiting to see Benedict in Leon, a Roman Catholic stronghold that has avoided the worst of the brutal turf wars.

Hundreds of Catholics dressed in white t-shirts and caps - many of them young people let out of school for the day - lined the streets to see the pope pass on his ride from the airport.

Several young believers cheering on the pope's planned route stood in front of a large banner that read "Pope, pray that the violence ends, pray that peace returns." "Violence is the country's biggest priority. There are some places where you can't even set foot outside it's so dangerous," said 16-year-old Martin Zamora who hung the sign with his Catholic youth group. "Many young people have decided to join up with organized crime instead of fighting it. That's what the pope is coming here for, to help save young people."

Benedict, who turns 85 next month, will rest for 24 hours to recover from jet lag. His main message will be delivered on Sunday at a massive outdoor service where hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend.

The pope's strong words on the drug menace should offer comfort to Calderon, who has staked his reputation on beating down the cartels. The government's inability to stem the violence has eroded support for Calderon's conservative National Action Party (PAN), which has strong Catholic roots and faces an uphill struggle to retain the presidency in elections in July.

Calderon hailed Benedict's arrival, saying it was of great significance at a time of "many hardships" for Mexico.

"Mexico has suffered, as your Holiness knows well, the ruthless and cruel violence of organized crime," he said in his welcome speech, which was followed by a performance of traditional folk dancers and mariachi musicians.

A survey by polling firm GCE published in newspaper Milenio on Friday showed 72 percent of respondents wanted the pope to speak out on the security situation in Mexico.

ABUSE SCANDALS

Benedict, who also travels to Cuba next week, hopes to rally the faithful in the world's second most populous Catholic nation as more Mexicans are lured to evangelical Protestant churches.

But the German pope faces a challenge generating the same kind of fervor as his charismatic Polish predecessor, Pope John Paul, who was beloved in Latin America and drew pulsating crowds when he criss-crossed the region in his 27-year papacy.

Highlighting the growing religious divisions in Mexico, a large Protestant church in Leon held a service with hundreds of worshippers on Thursday, prominently displaying a sign that read "We are not Roman Catholics.

The Vatican has been stung by accusations of child abuse by priests in parishes around the world - including revelations about Mexican religious leader Marcial Maciel, who founded a prominent Catholic order, the Legionaries of Christ.

Maciel, who died in 2008 at the age of 87, was disgraced by allegations of sexual abuse and drug addiction.

During the pope's visit, religious scholar Bernardo Barranco will present a new book by ex-Legionaries with scores of leaked Vatican documents the authors say prove the Holy See knew about Maciel's molestation of young boys and morphine use for decades.

"The enthusiasm (about the pope's visit) felt in Leon, is not the same in the rest of the country. The abuses by Father Maciel have cast a shadow," Barranco said in an interview.

Benedict has apologized for priest abuse in the past but has no plans to meet with Mexican victims.

"There is so much suffering in Mexico that to narrowly focus on just one issue would be extreme," said Father Jorge Martinez, an official from Mexico's Episcopal Conference, when asked if the pope would address questions about Maciel's legacy.

The pope heads to Cuba on Monday in a visit meant to bolster the position of the Church there and help the communist island move towards democracy. Communism, he said on Friday, no longer works in Cuba.

Highway bill becomes House Republican headache

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A bill that Republican leaders were promoting as the centerpiece of their job-creation agenda has instead turned into one of their biggest headaches, thanks largely to tea party conservatives who want to get the federal government out of transportation programs and hand them over to the states.

The House and Senate are heading toward a showdown next week that could result in a cutoff of federal highway and transit aid to states just as the spring construction season starts. The government's authority to spend money from the trust fund that pays for transportation programs, as well as its power to levy the federal gasoline and diesel taxes that feed the fund, expire on March 31. Democrats estimate as many as 1.8 million jobs supported by those programs are at risk.

Neither side wants a shutdown, but House Speaker John Boehner has been unable to recruit enough Republicans to pass the GOP's overhaul of federal highway programs. The biggest group of holdouts are conservatives who want highway programs to be paid for entirely by federal gas and diesel taxes even though that might mean a nearly 40 percent cut in spending because revenue from those taxes has declined.

Boehner's fallback plan is to pass a 90-day extension of current programs in order to give the House more time to line up votes for a comprehensive bill. But Senate Majority leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said Thursday he's "not inclined" to go along with an extension. He urged the House to instead take up a $109 billion bill the Senate passed last week by a bipartisan 74-22 vote.

"It's a good bill," Reid said. "But over in a big, dark hole we now refer to as the tea-party-dominated House of Representatives ... they destroyed their own bill, and now they won't agree to take up our bill." House Republicans, he said, "are going to have to feel the heat of the American people."

GOP Rep. Mike Pence, who favors "devolution" of responsibility for transportation to state and local governments, said he's undecided about the five-year, $260 billion GOP bill because he's concerned that it isn't paid for entirely with user fees like fuel taxes and because he doesn't like the way it divvies up highway aid among states.

"I have no doubt the state of Indiana could do a better job for taxpayers and for drivers than the federal government in maintaining our roads in Indiana," said Pence, who is running for governor. "I supported the last highway bill. I think that roads mean jobs. But it's essential that we produce a bill that is both fair and fiscally responsible."

The House bill actually takes a large step toward giving states far more flexibility over how they spend federal aid, said Rep. James Lankford, R-Okla., a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Currently, about 80 percent of state highway programs are paid for with federal aid and 20 percent with state money. Lankford, who is supporting the bill even though he also wants to cede more authority to the states, said he'd eventually like to see that ratio reversed.

Boehner, R-Ohio, blamed his difficulty in passing the bill on the House's ban on "earmarks" ? provisions that used to be tucked into bills that direct spending to lawmakers' pet projects.

"When it comes to things like the (last long-term) highway bill, which used to be very bipartisan, you have to understand it was greased to be bipartisan with 6,371 earmarks," Boehner told reporters. "You take the earmarks away, and guess what? All of a sudden people are beginning to look at the real policy behind it."

Boehner wants to use revenue from expanded oil drilling to help make up a shortfall between federal fuel tax revenues and transportation program spending. But the drilling proposal raises only about $4.3 billion over 10 years, while the gap between revenue and spending in his bill is more than $40 billion.

"The problem with the Senate bill is that it doesn't address the issue of rising gas prices and energy," Boehner said. "We believe that if we're going to reauthorize the highway bill, American energy production ought to be a critical part of it."

Several Republican lawmakers said they expect the Senate to go along with the House's 90-day extension despite Reid's hesitation.

Massive, rocket-powered, robotic craft begins delivery mission to space station

The 13-ton cargo freighter is loaded with about 7.2 tons of supplies, including food, water, clothing, experiments and fuel for the space station, according to NASA.

A huge robot European cargo ship launched to the International Space Station today (March 23), lighting up the night sky over the northeast coast of South America to begin a five-day journey to deliver key supplies to the orbiting outpost.

The European Space Agency's third Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV-3) lifted off at 12:34 a.m. EDT (0434 GMT) atop an Ariane 5 rocket from Europe's spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. After a brief light show, the rocket slipped through a cloud layer and soared into orbit.

The 13-ton cargo freighter is loaded with about 7.2 tons of supplies, including food, water, clothing, experiments and fuel for the space station, according to NASA. The unmanned ATV-3 is the heaviest load of cargo ever delivered to the station by a robotic spacecraft, ESA officials said in a statement.

The vehicle is scheduled to arrive at the space station on March 28 at 6:32 p.m. EDT (2232 GMT).

"This is just the start of a very long journey which will take the Edoardo Amaldi into space for about five months," ESA Director-General Jean-Jacques Dordain said after the successful launch. "It's a good start; a very good start."?[Dazzling Night Launch Photos of Europe's ATV-3]

The ATV-3 is nicknamed "Edoardo Amaldi" after the famed Italian physicist and spaceflight pioneer who is credited with helping to create the European Space Agency. Amaldi is also one of the founding fathers of CERN, the?particle physics laboratory?along the Swiss-French border that houses the Large Hadron Collider.

The cylindrical spacecraft is 35 feet (10.7 meters) long and 14.7 feet (4.5 meters) wide - large enough to fit a double-decker bus inside. Europe's disposable ATVs are designed to automatically dock to the Zvezda module on the Russian portion of the International Space Station. ?

The cargo ships then remain attached to the complex for up to six months before they are packed with garbage and deliberately sent to?burn up during atmospheric re-entry.

Gary Pruitt of McClatchy new AP president, CEO

(AP Photo/The McClatchy Co.)

(AP) ? Gary Pruitt, a former First Amendment lawyer who heads the third-largest newspaper company in the U.S., will become the next president and CEO of The Associated Press, the cooperative announced Wednesday.

Pruitt, the chairman, president and CEO of The McClatchy Co., will join AP in July, taking over for Tom Curley, who is retiring after leading the news organization for nine years.

"In Gary, we have chosen a seasoned and worthy successor to Tom Curley to continue AP's transition to a digital news company," said William Dean Singleton, outgoing chairman of the AP Board of Directors and chairman of MediaNews Group Inc. "Gary has deep experience in the changing world of the news industry, an acute business sense and an overriding understanding of and commitment to AP's news mission."

Pruitt, 54, will take over an organization pressed by rapid changes in the news industry. AP has spent most of the past decade working to transform itself, launching new platforms for multimedia content, seeking fresh sources of revenue and protecting the results of its newsgathering in the online marketplace.

"I think AP is successfully transitioning, but the transition isn't over and it never will be," Pruitt said in an interview.

Intense pressure on many media companies has made them increasingly reliant on AP newsgathering. But to continue delivering its journalism, Pruitt said the organization must look for more revenue by expanding in Asia and other fast-growing regions worldwide and by increasing its product offerings.

"We've got to get it right," he said. "Too many people are counting on us every day for their complete news report. We've got to be able to not just sustain it but to grow it and improve it."

More than half the world's population sees news reported by the AP on any given day. The not-for-profit cooperative, based in New York and owned by its member newspapers, has about 3,700 employees ? about two-thirds of them journalists ? in more than 300 locations worldwide, including all 50 U.S. states.

Pruitt, the 13th person to head the cooperative since its founding in 1846, joins AP after leading McClatchy through a tumultuous period, as consumers turned increasingly to digital news sources and devices and advertisers followed suit.

"Gary's experience spans a wide range of media, from print to digital, but he also has been closely involved in successful media advertising efforts and technology partnerships that play such a crucial role in the news industry today," said Mary Junck, AP's incoming chairman, who headed the search committee and is chairman and CEO of Lee Enterprises. "His commitment to high-quality news content mirrors AP's values of accuracy, fairness and independence."

Pruitt led McClatchy in its 2006 acquisition of much larger competitor Knight Ridder Inc., a deal valued at $6.5 billion, including $2 billion in assumed debt. The purchase and subsequent sale of some of Knight Ridder's holdings made McClatchy the nation's third-largest newspaper publisher. The company publishes 30 daily newspapers, including The Miami Herald, The Sacramento Bee and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Under Pruitt, Sacramento-based McClatchy also expanded its digital business, adding stakes in online ventures including job site CareerBuilder.com and auto-focused Cars.com. Digital advertising now accounts for about 20 percent of McClatchy's total ad revenue.

Pruitt joined McClatchy as its general counsel in 1984, after working as a First Amendment lawyer. He was named assistant to the president at The Sacramento Bee in 1990 and became publisher of The Fresno Bee the following year. In 1994, he was promoted to McClatchy's vice president of operations and technology. He was chosen as McClatchy's president and chief operating officer in 1995, becoming chief executive officer in 1996 and chairman in 2001.

Pruitt has been a member of AP's board for nine years, at one point serving as vice chairman.

In a note sent to AP employees Thursday, Curley explained that he plans to stay on until August so he can accompany Pruitt to the Summer Olympics in London.

"Gary takes over at an inflection point for AP," Curley said in the note. "The hard work you have all done the past several years has brought us so close to transformation into a modern digital media company. I cannot think of anyone more capable of helping AP successfully execute on its new plans and strategies than Gary. You are in good hands."

Be a Big Wheel: Get the best in Cycling Equipment

To become fit and do something as a family, we decided to take up cycling.

Cycling equipment has unlimited possibilities of style, colour, size and designer brands. Moreover, the decision concerning which cycling gear to purchase is mind boggling.

Purist cyclists build their own custom "rides". If you are a confirmed cyclist this means building your bicycle from the ground up! Those who want a specific brand with customized pedals, handlebars, and seat and safety equipment but do not have the time or skill necessary to build a customized cycle can opt to have one built to their specifications by a cycle shop.

If you are novices like we are, you can purchase a ready-made cycle at any cycle or sports retail centre or at one of the many online cycle sites. Having made the decision about whether to purchase road cycles or mountain cycles or triathlon cycles and which brand to buy, we were faced with decisions about which custom saddles, pedals and handlebars and handlebar grips are best for each cyclist.

Just when I thought decision making time and stress were at an end, I was faced with the next hurdle: what to wear.

Foolishly, I decided that my walking clothes and running shoes would be fine. My sister was scandalized. Cycling without the proper cycling equipment and the latest fashion was as gauche as horseback riding in blue jeans and sneakers.

So off we went to get proper cycling attire. Apparently any serious cyclist must have proper, designer rain gear. My solution was not to venture out when it looked like rain but apparently serious cyclists brave all manner of weather.

According to my sister and the helpful staff at the cycling equipment store, one needs baggy cycling shorts to allow for comfort and range of motion.

I was also allowing for thirty extra pounds when I chose this style. Cyclists can improve their ride and cut wind resistance with designer cycling shorts which also make for a more comfortable saddle sit as well.

Next one needs a base layer. This keeps you warm in windy and cold weather. Then one needs cycling gloves. The choice of brand names, styles, colours and sizes is dizzying. Full finger gloves will protect from cold and wind. If you choose full finger gloves then you have an option of thick, thin or lobster layer gloves. Short finger gloves provide less protection but more freedom.

Next cycling shoes demanded serious consideration. The choices in type alone made me reel. Did I want touring shoes, mountain bike shoes, road bike shoes or casual biking shoes? These of course came in every style, shape, brand, and colour. They were available in a stunning array of cleat styles.

For a mere fortune I am now clad from head to toe in the latest designer cycling gear.

Android study finds privacy and security risks related to in-app advertising

Android has certainly taken heat for malware-related bits in the past. Now, a recent study by computer scientists at North Carolina State University reveals that over half of the 100,000 apps from the Android Market Google Play include so-called ad libraries, which are essentially handed out by Google or third-party devs to retrieve ads from servers and launch them on your phone. Of these, 297 were classified as "aggressive," as they're allowed to run code from a remote server. Furthermore, Dr. Jiang along with his squad of researchers found that more than 48,000 of the apps put to the test could track location via GPS, while other accessed info could range from call logs, contact numbers, to the apps list on your device. It's unclear if this also applies to Android slates, though this particular study conducted only included handsets.

Rebels eye border launchpad to 'liberate' Syria

In a mountain hideout on Syria's border with Turkey, amid olive trees and Roman ruins, Abu Suleiman's band of fighters barely flinch as Syrian army shells crash in the distance.

The rebel fighters rule the roost over dozens of square kilometres (square miles) of steep, rocky terrain and fertile red soil, dotted with hamlets and villages, in the northwestern province of Idlib.

Some of them fought in the city of Idlib, overtaken by government forces last week as rebels pulled back to the safety of the mountains.

"Their tanks can't climb up here, and they're scared of ambushes," said Abu Suleiman. "And we're so near the Turkish border that (President) Bashar (al-Assad) wouldn't dare use planes because he fears the Turks."

The son of a prominent figure from the city of Hama in central Syria who was killed in the notoriously brutal suppression of a 1982 revolt, Abu Suleiman has assembled one of the multitude of armed groups fighting the regime.

Abu Suleiman, 35, who finances the weapons for the unit which carries his name, greets the young gunmen posted at crossroads and entrances to villages as he makes his daily rounds at the wheel of a white saloon car.

He says the unit has 1,000 fighters.

Housed in four breezeblock cabins at the top of a hill rich with springtime greenery, circled by the ruins of Roman baths, an AFP journalist spotted 30 of them on Sunday.

A fighter wounded at Idlib by a bullet in the shoulder, Nasser, 24, lay under a blanket with a sad smile on his face, bandaged and attached to a drip, as he took in some sunshine.

Abu Suleiman's men are lightly armed, with Kalashknikov assault rifles, some machineguns, a launcher with a single grenade. The way many of them carry their arms show they are new to the game, although some are army deserters.

"Our aim is to drive Bashar's army off the whole mountain," said Abu Suleiman. "We will make them flee the villages where they're still around and this will be our region: launchpad of the liberation," he said.

"We don't need men. What we do need is arms: anti-tanks rockets, surface-to-air missiles. Modern and effective stuff," said the rebel chief.

"How long will it talk? Who can say? But the United Nations may take two years to finally take some kind of decision. We can wait. This war will be a long one," he predicted.

The Abu Suleiman fighters hold a slice of territory and say they cooperate with nearby units to carry out raids on security forces. But they are no admirers of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), based across the border in Turkey.

"I've been three times to Turkey to see its leader, Riyadh al-Asaad," said Captain Ayub, a second-in command.

"I asked him to give us money, guns. He didn't do a thing. He's all talk. He's a liar. What he wants is to take Bashar's place in the palace, nothing else!" he charged, angrily.

Fighters who don't sleep in the small base are put up in safehouses, one in each hamlet.

They spend their time watching videos on laptops of how to assemble bombs and roadside bombs. They carry homemade grenades and say their modest arsenal also includes large versions capable of taking out armoured cars.

On a rooftop, thousands of automatic weapons rounds were spread out for drying from several days of rainfall in the region.

"We need more," said Abdullah Zarzur, 30, who was an Arabic teacher before the anti-Assad revolt broke out last March that has cost thousands of lives in a regime crackdown.

"These come from Lebanon but we need more powerful weapons. If the UN and NATO don't help us, our battle will drag on for years. Bashar is strong. He's been arming his people for the past 40 years" of rule by the Assad family.

As Abu Suleiman's men fired off practise rounds at rocks, alarmed young men on donkeys loaded with olive wood kicked their spurs to hurry off.
