Things To Avoid If You Have Acid Reflux | The Board Magazine

If you suffer from frequent heartburn you may well have begun researching what foods help with symptoms and in the process have come across a large list of suspects.

You might well be forgiven for believing that life with acid reflux could be a little boring, certainly as far as food is concerned.

Read about heartburn in any magazine and all they seem to be telling you is to cut out all your favorite foods and drinks, eat bland, low fat, low calorie foods with no taste and at all costs?..don?t drink coffee or alcohol.

GERD ? Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease, call it what you will, will change your life. There is no doubt about that.

Constant heartburn and acid indigestion is wearing, tiring and just plain unpleasant. After a while you feel that you are willing to do anything to stop your suffering.

But?.before you stop eating all your favorite things, do two things. Change your lifestyle Do your research

All of us have bad habits that we have developed as we go through life and some of them are bad habits that will help to aggravate acid reflux.

Why do you think that heartburn tends to be prevalent in the over forties? We have had longer to develop the bad habits.

Eat too quickly? ? slow down ? You?ll eat less and improve your digestion, both of which will help with heartburn.
Do you eat too much? ? eating smaller meals and eating more frequently is better than overeating
Drink a lot? ? Alcohol relaxes the sphincter muscle at the base of the esophagus and causes heartburn and acid reflux.
Eat late in the evening? ? Try not to eat within three hours of your normal bedtime. It will help with acid reflux and also help control your weight.
Are you overweight ? lose weight. Carrying extra weight is a major contributor to acid reflux disease as extra fat stored around the internal organs puts pressure on your stomach, and it?s doing the same to your heart!!
Eat junk food? That was a question not a command. If so, just try to eat less of it. Fresh is best where heartburn is concerned.

Do Your Research?

When you first see the long list of foods to avoid for heartburn you may well go into a panic. Don?t. It is a list of foods that are suspected of causing or aggravating acid reflux. Just because it?s on the list doesn?t mean that you mustn?t eat it.

Keep a diary! Every time that you experience acid reflux, write down what you had to eat before hand. It?s also worth thinking about what you were doing before you got acid indigestion. Lie down shortly after eating and no matter what you have eaten you will get acid reflux. Bend over so that your stomach is compressed ? and you will get acid indigestion. Exercise too soon after eating ? and you develop acid reflux.
